Confragus roasting on a smoldering day, Joseph could not remember the last time he had to heave himself up into the rough necks of a mountain trails for anything. He was trucking along nice and steady, but you don't just heave a mountain up another one so easily. In fact, you wouldn't be doing such a braixen sort of thing in the first place unless there was good reason for it! Something that he unfortunately had, as it was a personal creed to do a bonding test with a new companion in his line-up.[break][break]

A purdy thing, this Heracross was! She came into his party after some rough housing with Dhelmise, leading to the heart horned vixen being the newest member to the Burnside patrol. And as a custom of his, Joseph made sure to do something special to commemorate the occasion! Tauros and him plowed several acres of land by hand, Dhelmise was part of an inland tow for a malfunctioning tugger, and Girafarig...made the big man shudder. He could handle physical labor but Girafarig's bonding moment really was a mental trip. It only confirmed that the mind was truly a vast plain that only a few could comprehend. None of them likely human either.[break][break]

Still, he was hooving it up here with his new Heracross, who seemed to be thrilled at the thought of training in these austere ridges. Jagged Pass to be precise, but Joseph had a hunkering a little bit of focused battle training ought to get the blood pumping. No sense faltering now when his Heracross was thrusting her horn around like it was a jabbing machine. Kinda made him think of some things he'd need to refine on to match his style of battle. As the two came into a clearing connected to the network of thin paths, he took a moment to park on a flat rock and take a swig of water. A separate bottle of clear sap was offered to Heracross, who gladly took in the sustenance.[break][break]

Unlike the intentions some may have when visiting a place like Jagged Pass, on the surface, Mars’ own are much more simple: a nice walk.

He even bothered with putting on the trekking boots that seem to see the outside of his closet much more as of late, but even with such suitable equipment, the man finds himself almost regretting not choosing to get on his Noivern’s back and fly over the treacherous volcanic path.

It would sure be a lot easier, wouldn’t it?

But… It would also mean that he could miss noticing certain wild pokémon. Pokémon that generally prefer to remain hidden and unseen.

Subtle ones, perhaps.
[break][break]
A word that probably wouldn’t be fitting when describing the stranger Mars notices near the upcoming crossroads, nor when describing the Heracross by his side.

Wiping several beads of sweat off his grand brow, Joseph couldn't help but turn his head towards the direction of the speaker when addressed to. The voice belonged to a young man dressed in your everyday gear, perhaps a tad light for the typical mountaineer. If he were a betting man, Joseph might've guessed this man was out for a leisurely hike. Or a light workout after taking a second gander at the sweat stains soaking through his shirt. He guffawed a little. Joseph couldn't help but feel a bit better after seeing a young man finding some difficulty in this trek too![break][break]

"Howdy ser." Jospeh replied back, "Glad to see I'm not the only crazy Bouffalant thinking it was a good day to trek up this confounding mountain! Guwfaafafaa![break][break]

With a small heave, the older man hoisted himself back onto his boots. He clutched the straps of his large duffel bag and approached the stranger. Few steps later, he was close enough for a handshake and initiated the gesture. His large, Tauros horseshoe decorated glove extended completely and stood fast for a response from the other man. Tacking on a "Name's Joseph Burnside." and you had yourself a traditional country greeting.[break][break]

Rustling sounds ruined the moment, as sounds of a pebbles rolling down the mountain caught the attention of Joseph's Heracross. She snapped to attention and had her heart shaped horn pointed in the direction of the sound and scowled. Emerging from the rocky formations lining the mountain was a slow hopping, orange speckled blob. It wiggled as its tiny tentacles as the Pokemon dragged a pair of blue boxing gloves. Joseph cusped his chin while taking a gander at the wild Pokemon, eventually recognizing it as a Clobbopus. A tiny tyke with a mean uppercut for sure, who happened to be an ideal opponent for the greenhorn Heracross he accompanied. Joseph opted to give up the initiative, noticing his Heracross following the source in the sky for a moving shadow.[break][break]

A Xatu. This green flier frequented the farm since he was a lad, and often were easy to feed scraps to. This one came down to perch on the jagged walls of the route, observing the gathering taking place. A less than ideal situation was brewing, as Xatus weren't hot-heads like a Spearow in sweltering summer days. They might be genuinely curious, or opportunistically patient. He had no doubt a bad play would spell a bad end. He'd trust his Tauros or Dhelmise for a two on one, but a new, untested bond with Heracross put doubts in getting a victory without serious harm taking place.[break][break]

"Sorry to bother you friend," Joseph asked, formulating a plan in his head. "Might I offer a joint effort against these fellas?"
